State Route 70 (Sunshine Coast) (Sunshine Motorway,
Emu Mountain Road & Beckmans Road)
Queensland's State Route 70 has a
chequered past. Located between the Bruce Highway (NH1)
at Tanawha, north of Brisbane and Eumundi-Noosa Road
(SR12) at Doonan, it was designed to be a key freeway
for the coastal area it travels through on the Sunshine
Coast.
The route includes the Sunshine and
Emu Mountain Motorways and passes through towns such
as Buderim, Maroochydore, Bli Bli, Coolum and more.
The Sunshine Motorway is Super 2 standard
expressway. Originally tolled, the route was destined
to be dual carriageway 4 lane standard after a few years
of tolling, but local residents and politicians were
so incensed by the idea of a toll, the tolls were removed,
thus rendering the road an understated main road. Plans
are still in the pipeline to duplicate it, with some
works underway during 2006. If the toll was kept the
entire route would have been dual multi-lane carriageway
for quite sometime now. Some interchanges along the
route have been built, other connections to major roads
along the route are via roundabouts, which will probably
be removed when upgrading to full dual carriageway eventually
occurs.
This route does not connect with the
Peak Downs Highway (also SR70) in northern QLD.
