The Roads and Traffic Authority began rolling out alphanumeric route numbers quietly from 2001. Click here for an unnoffical list of alphanumeric route number allocations.
The first official implementation of an alphanumeric route number in New South Wales was M7, for the Westlink motorway in Sydney's western suburbs. It was commissioned on 16 December 2005.
